the truth and the hoax – the hoax and the truth

Spend April Fools Day at an interdisciplinary conference organised by postgraduates from the English Department at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia.

Topics include:

  • Fools and impostors
  • Pranks and pranksters
  • Great, and not so great, historical and fictional hoaxes
  • My life as a fake – truth and deceit in fiction and non-fiction
  • Is faking for a cause okay?
  • Thrilling tales – both tall and true

Presentations will include talks, readings, panel discussions, performances and visual displays.

Keynote address: Dr Jane Roscoe, Programming Executive at SBS Television and co-author of Faking It: Mock documentary and the subversion of factuality (Manchester University Press, 2001)

Program Changes:
Michael Fitzgerald replaces Donna Lee Brien. Michael's presentation will be "Truth and Character: Comedy and the Possibilty of 'Plain Dealing'"

Catherine Padmore replaces Carrie Tiffany. Catherine's presentation will be "Debating Demidenko - ten years on"
